The Wedilunu Cave, also known as Nitro Cave, is in another picturesque village hidden among Meemure’s five villages. Access to this cave is another official trail in the Knuckles range. We are starting this hike from Karambaketiya village, off Corbett’s Gap on Hunnasgiriya – Meemure road, the hike can be undertaken by anyone who takes regular exercise or is reasonably confident of one’s physical ability. The initial hike up to Nitro Cave will be 7.5 km through the village and hikers must climb a steep gradient of 2km to reach the Nitro Cave. The cave, which stored gunpowder during King Ravana’s reign, is thought to be used as a transportation hub during the Kandyan period. Although the popular Sinhala folklore poem “Inne dumbarai maha kalu galak yata” was said to be a mine poem, Dumbara Valley is devoid of mines. The alternative theory is that the banished Kandyan had a wretched life here and supplied ammunition to the monarch from here.
Kosgolla and Naa Ella waterfalls are two unique hidden waterfalls located deep inside the Knuckles Conservation Forest. From Nitro cave, hikers must do a 2-3 km downhill hike towards to the two waterfalls. This natural wonder is a part of a region renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. These two waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery and offers a serene escape for nature enthusiasts and hikers. Visitors to Kosgolla & Naa Ella falls can enjoy the tranquil environment and opportunity to explore the surrounding trails, which provide breathtaking views of the mountainous terrain. Total distance of the hike will be 20 K.M.
Hiking during the rainy season is risky since the “Naa Ella” can overflow, we offer safety equipment’s, necessary guidance and the knowledge about Flora and Fauna.
The best months are from June to September to experience this one of the most adventurous hikes in Sri Lanka.
