Trekking to Idalgashinna via Thangamale Forest Reserve – The sanctuary is in Thangamale near Haputale, the golden mountain, as well as experience an almost magical atmosphere in the often-foggy mountain forest and is part of the Glenmore Tea Estate. The 131 hectares of land was declared as a protected area in 1938. Approximately two kilometers away from Haputale town, the best and most interesting path to approach this sanctuary is a trek down a footpath that is on the left of the Adisham bungalow, the well-known retreat of St. Benedictine monks.
The trek has about seven kilometers, and the route will grant you a spectacular panorama-on the right the Uva basin, the valley of Diyatalawa, the mountain ranges of Thotupola, Hakgala, Pidurutalagala, St. Catherine’s Dambetenna and Namunukula, and the majestic Thangamale Mountain. Trekkers can trek up to the Idalgashinna railway station and then through the Glenmore tea estate to Haputale. Total trekking distance will be 12 km. Difficulty level is medium to high.
Trekking to Idalgashinna via Thangamale Forest Reserve is a combination of rainforest trekking, railway hike and trekking through tea estate. Difficulty level – Easy to Moderate.
